One Girl {How to Change the World}

by Laura on October 13, 2010

I get it. You can’t change the world.  Neither can I.

No single one of us has the resources, the time, or the ability to solve global poverty or human trafficking or the AIDS pandemic. We read the articles and see the Oprah specials and hear the statistics, and the problems just seem so big.

Much. Too. Big.

And the enormity of the needs usually leaves us paralyzed, rather than mobilized.

But, what if.  What.  If.

What if you had the power to change her world?

She whose parents were killed in a car accident in a remote village.

Or her, whose father has been missing for years.

Or she, who misses her mom,

but can’t go to school if she stays home.

Not changing the the whole world.  Just changing the world for One Girl.

What if you had the power to play a role in giving her a hand-up, out of poverty and into hope?

And what if you could see videos of her, even from across seas, and what if you could email her and she could even email you back from time to time?  What if you could foster a daughter, in prayers and finances and love, in a small Christian Home in Northern Thailand?  One that you are already reading about from a terribly crappy missionary?

What.  If.

We are launching our new sponsorship programfor our 42 girls here at Breanna’s House of Joy.  Currently, we are attempting to raise up two sponsors for each of our girls, at $50 per month.  Since we are a small operation, our hope is that sponsors will be able to connect on a more consistent basis with the girl they support monthly–in email, in occasional videos, and in blog updates with stories and photos of their daily lives (written by yours truly).

I realize that there are countlessways to give, to get involved, to do your part. And there are, indeed, so many good ones.  And I know we all get pleas for finances in the mail and over the wires constantly.  But, if you are following here already, and if you are being stirred, would you consider sponsoring one of our girls?  Would you pray about investing here, on this patch of jungle, into the heart of a precious girl, born into the world much lower on the ladder-rung than any of us?

If you are interested, spend a moment looking through the

photos and information on each of our girls

on the new section of our website.  Maybe there will be a girl who naturally tugs your heart, a face  you can’t get out of your head, an interest listed that reminds you of something in your own story.  Be open for a connection.  And, if you feel led, email me at OneGirlSponsor@gmail.com , requesting which girl you’d like to sponsor, and I will send you the necessary information.  All funds will go to the education, medical, and daily-care expenses of Breanna’s House and the care of your daughter, over here, and all gifts are tax-deductible.

Another way you could be involved financially with our ministry here in Thailand is in giving to our own family’s expenses.  We currently do not take a salary from the NGO here, but are supported by both financial gifts and some income received from hosting teams. If you’d like to donate through our accounting agency for a tax-deductible gift, visit the Give Page of this blog.

And, honestly, this may not be your puzzle piece. This home, these girls, this family may not be where you are called to invest. And there is freedom in that.  Absolutely.  Definitely. Please, please, please, know that.  We all have uniquely good ways to love the world.

As always, as always, thanks for journeying with me.  The gift of your presence on these pages is just that, a gift.  Thanks for inviting me into your worlds; I’m honored to take up a bit of space there.

      Tamara,

That is SO incredibly funny. Really. Maybe YOU should be the one writing this thing. ha ha.
ANd thanks for praying and sending this along.

      Teri,
Thanks for the encouragement, and I can’t wait to see where you guys are led. Would love to follow you guys on that journey, too.

Isn’t it beautiful that we all have a different, beautiful role to play? Glad we don’t all have the same road to walk.

SUCH an excellent idea. Not sure if this is our puzzle piece – as God seems to be calling us to a different & similar kind of rescue, a bit closer to home. Knocking on doors. Praying. Seeking. Will let ya know when we know more…

    Wow, those girls are gorgeous!

You know, my husband comes from a long line of missionaries, and his maternal great-grandparents were missionaries in Thailand. I need to pull out a book that has the information about them in it and see if they were anywhere close to where you are located. Wouldn’t that be wild if we just met and discovered a link like that?

I am so encouraged by all of this. I’m so sad to say we won’t be sponsoring one of these girls….but I just happened upon your blog and am so encouraged to see your family living out your faith and loving orphans. And I pray you would find each of those 42 girls 2 sponsors.

Tara, thanks, new-friend. Thanks for being touched and moved by the faces and hearts of these girls over here. What a gift that is . . . as is your prayers. A bigger gift than we can ever know on this side.

      grateful for YOU, L
