The Excuse

by Laura on September 2, 2010

Typos that don’t get fixed.

Comments that go unanswered.

Videos that only half-upload.

Unexplained absences.

This is the fallout from attempting to blog consistently from rice fields.

Internet is a commodity I have learned not to count on in this life overseas.  Wireless and speed have become smaller concerns in light of just having anything, at all.  (Currently, we do not have internet access at our house.)  Sometimes I will be in the middle of editing a live post when the power goes out for the evening because of a storm.  Other times, I will have to write an update at home and upload it later at a coffee shop, in the space of time it takes my three children to be distracted by the consumption of one icecream cone each.  I don’t have a phone that will text messages to Twitter, and I generally don’t have web access long enough to post the videos I have in que for YouTube.  In a world where social networking has become such a large factor in “blog success,” I am not in a position to be social {based on my present foreign location} or network {based on my current technological lameness}.

And I would be lying to say that I don’t grit my teeth at this reality.  A lot.

It seems in my “blogging ability,” I am tied in many ways to this latitude I’m walking.

But, then again, I am tied in many ways to this latitude I am walking.

And maybe the lessons learned are worth the restraints.

Regardless, thank you for your patience and grace . . .

And maybe your lower expectations, too.

Since I typically write while you sleep (literally), consider subscribing to Life Overseas.  Posts get sent to your email, so you won’t miss one single thing–regardless of when I throw it up on the web.  It’s free and easy.

And, as always, I love your comments.  It reminds me that other people speak English, and that some are actually reading the English I write.  Happy Almost-Weekend, Friends.

Kim from HongKong, Girl, I know you KNOW. Thank you for blogging, too. I guess we are both learning technology in other places is not always the same as in the good ol U.S. of A. Press on, too, sharing the journey. :)

Kim from NC, Thank you so much for your heart to pray for us, for me specifically, and for your encouragement. Right now, a specific prayer request is to pray for a a good guy friend for my son, Cade. Been here 5 months now, and he desperately needs a little guy friend. He is surrounded by girls. All. the. Time. He needs a buddy. Would you pray for that? Will send other requests your way, when I think of it. THANK YOU.

Zane and Jan. Ha ha. I was speaking of Yall’s day off/weekend, of course. Nope, haven’t really figured that out for us quite yet. It’s a moving target, for sure. I know you Know all about that. :)

Laura, Thank you for being so “real” upfront and honest. I appreciate what you share and find it interesting as to what God is doing in other parts of the world. Your example of following and submitting to your husband is such a beautiful testimony. I would love to be able to pray more specifically for you. I don’t know how you would communicate this: email, blog, facebook? So here’s my email address: kimholt@charter.net I know you are busy with your little ones, but when you get a chance, let me know how I can pray for you! Love and Hugs!!! :-)

Oh Laura, I feel such similar, teeth-gritting frustrations…just ’cause of this altitude I am walking. With my ancient computer and horribly slow, intermittent, inconsistent internet due to living up in Nat’l Forest without access to typical cable connections, etc. Just today I was whining to Kevin about it, as I’m finally trying my hand at blogging ( http://www.freeagentmommy.com ), and am so irritated with the technological stumbling blocks I thought no one else has to deal with. Thanks for putting my petulant little attitude in perspective. ‘Course your blog is pretty much my inspiration. I figure if you can do it, I have no excuse…

oh my goodness, Teri–you are so awesome! your comment totally brought a smile to an otherwise crappy day. :)

Can’t wait to go check out your site. press on, my friend. i find that blogging really does fuel my soul, help me process, and lets me into other people’s worlds that i would never have were it not for this machine in front of me. THAT i love. THE power shortages and getting a coffee while one page uploads, not so much.

Dear Sister in Christ, I have been reading your blog, and I LOVE it! Thank you for being so honest. I know how hard it is to be in a land with out…. it seems like everything sometimes. I live part time in Serbia. Post communist country with out many modern conveniences.
When in Serbia, I write up my blogs off line and later upload them when and where internet is available. I complain about this, and then think of so many who have gone abroad before without any contact with home and I cherish the inconsistent yet somewhat available communication with those at home.

You are strong and when you are weak, you have someone who makes you strong! Carry on the great work.

WOw, Serbia. Tina, you are my new hero. I can’t imagine the challenge of that lifestyle. And, yes, when I think of people who lived away from home, even 50 years ago, it makes me feel pretty silly to be complaining at all.

So glad you along the journey with me here . . . can’t wait to learn about what you are doing in Serbia!

Love, Laura
