Question {for God}

by Laura on September 5, 2010

Today’s question is a good one.  Perhaps my all-time favorite.

Just imagine you are sitting in the corner of a quiet cafe with God himself.  And you have the chance to ask him Anything.  At.  All.  And He promises to answer.

What would you want to know?  Would it be about why that happened to you in the past or would it be about why that happens in Africa right now?  Would it be about the existence of hell or would it be about the presence of evil?  Would it be about the creation of the world or about the destruction of your faith?  Put yourself at that table in the coffee shop and consider,

If you could ask God one question, what would it be?

Again, anything goes.  Nothing is off-limits or wrong or too big or too small.  Be real, and take a moment to enter the conversation by commenting {I’d like to see more people respond to this question than all the rest, I think.  Since it’s my favorite, and all.}  I promise, I”ll go, too.

Before the sermon I heard today my question would have been different but because of what I heard I would have to ask “Why me God why would you save me?”

I joke that I have a post-it note of questions for God. More like a POSTER at this point. My global question is why does He bother with humanity at all? My specific-to-my-life question is in what way was it helpful to His plan to allow my healthy, 22-year-old nephew to die in his sleep?

Kim I ask that question of God constantly.

Why did you allow me to wait so long in life to finally understand what being a follower of you actually means? Why couldn’t you have taught me this ten years ago?

Why must children suffer. I know because of sin, but it breaks my heart and I know it breaks His so much more. So why? Precious little ones.

I think that I would really need to know why love has to include deep and agonizing pain. Why does sacrificing have to include hurting? Why can’t we love others without without getting our hearts broken into unrecognizable shards?

Why is it that the right thing to do is so often the hardest thing to do? IE—Why is it so difficult to stop crappy old patterns of selfishness and negativity, even when we KNOW that Your Way is The Best Way?

Why is it that we have bad things happen to us so that we can add it to our testimony?
Is there a different way to test our character?
Like Job why on earth would he go through so much only to be blessed abundantly in the end? couldn’t he have been blessed without all that destruction?

How do You decide when to intercede in the physical part of us human’s life?

So what really happens to all those who have never heard the name of Jesus? What does their eternity look like and how does that reconcile with what you say in the Bible and how I know you are both Loving and Just?

Oh, and a few more {just because I wanna} . . .

-Did you create other worlds that are existing right now, and is their Story like the one we are living on earth?

-What do you want me to do with my life?

-How much do you REALLY love me?

-What’s one insight I should have into the hearts of each of my kids?

-Could you explain, um, let’s say, the entire bible, to me?
Yeah, I think that would be a good use of my one question. :)

Why is do You let our flesh nature be so strong? When we want to turn from our fleshy ways, it is such a pull to go back.

I’m with one of the previous commenters:
How the heck is it that God allows little children to suffer and does not feel compelled to intervene?

Ok, this may not be the answer, but I just had a major epiphany and figure I’d better post it here in case I lose courage and don’t tell it to anyone else:

So, I’ve had the above question for several years and I’m not on the best terms with God because of it. It is weird because this question just became HUGE to me out of the blue: I didn’t suffer much as a kid, and I didn’t hear a certain story that brought the question to the forefront. It is just the accumulation of learning about all the sh** that happens in the world… Anyways, so the major epiphany that I JUST NOW had is that maybe I all of a sudden care about this because HE cares about it and wants me to be His hands. So. Wow. Now what !?!

Susan, thanks for your honesty. And I agree that this question is a hard one. And one that definitely causes lots of us to wrestle and question and say, “what the heck?!” There’s something about the suffering of the innocent that is just exceptionally . . . awful. I totally agree.

But, I do love your epiphany that you shared. That maybe God stirs our hearts because he wants us to be a part of the solution to the some of the suffering around us. That maybe we are his hands and feet and maybe we humans are doing a really terrible job of that. Unfortunately, particularly those of us who claim to want to follow Jesus–the Ultimate Love-Giver.

I guess you are faced now with a good question . . . what’s the next step for YOU, right now, to help the suffering of the children, globally or locally?

Let us know what you come up with . . . and how it goes.

Best wishes on your journey. Keep us posted.

Love, Laura

why are there so many “better” and moral people outside the christian church, who have no belief in a god but somehow take better care of humanity and– as a whole– are more complex, interesting and less materialistic people in general?
