I am reading with some friends The Life of Jesus published by Tyndale. It is the chronological, integrated story of Jesus, written in novel format. Today’s reading included two different men that asked Jesus for a miracle. The first man was a Pharisee, a member of religious leaders whom Jesus often confronted with pride and legalism. The Pharisee demanded a miraculous sign for evidence of Jesus’s authority. “Prove it,” he said. The second man was a father whose son was desperately sick. This man honestly asked Jesus for healing and admitted his lack of faith. “I believe some, but help me with my doubt,” the father said. Two very different men, both wanting the same thing. And Jesus’s response? One man sees the miracle, while the other sees Jesus’s back as He walks away. And I am left asking myself, which man am I most like today?
To See a Miracle
One man was full of pride and knowledge and comfort. The other was full of humility and honesty and desperation. And they both doubted. But they both also asked for a miracle. Both looked into the eyes of Jesus and begged for the impossible. And to the first, Jesus sighed and walked away leaving even more unbelief. But, for the second, He gave compassion and a healing that erased all doubt.
